When its foggy on the Solent, its better to rely on your radar
signal than have a wild stab in the dark. The Portsmouth to Ryde ferry
tried this and failed. Not only that, after crashing into the pier,
they
reversed up and had another try, hoping no-one would notice.
Meanwhile
a taxi drove up the pier to meet the marauding ferry, needless to
say, it went down the new addition to Ryde Pier, a big hole!
Luckily
the driver survived.

Its 1957 and Shanklin Town Council have decided to have a new cliff
lift built, the best
way to get rid of the old one was to blow it up, so they did!
Boom!

Trains are delayed due to water on the tracks! Passengers would
have needed diving apparatus to make this journey
from Ryde St. Johns Station to the Esplanade in October 1908.

Moving on a bit, the No. 27 bus from Freshwater steams down School
Green Road in 1960 on its way to Newport

This bus is steaming up Union Street, Ryde in 1905. The Police
are on hand in case of speeding, the man with the red flag who is
required
to walk in front of motorised vehicles is singularly missing.

More floods, back to Hunnyhill in 1960, a rather brave, or silly,
motorist
braves the flood at Town gate bridge,
even the film got soggy on this day!
